Saturday, April 27: 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM

  • Lab 1: Four M’s for Financial Literacy & Independence Instructor: Derrick Deese | Have you ever wondered how people build and sustain wealth?  This interactive workshop focuses on building the foundations for financial literacy and a framework to develop their own path forward to financial freedom.  Derrick Deese from Amazon will provide his own journey and tips, all while making the session fun, tangible, and something that you can share with others.

  • Lab 2: Life 101: A secure financial future starts here Instructor: Erin Green | Whether your calling is Fine Arts or Finance, High Fashion or High Tech, the skills you will learn in this class are must-haves for the transition to adulthood. We will cover banking, budgeting, when it is (and isn’t) okay to go into debt, tax basics, and other adulting essentials. Presenter, Erin Green, combines her business background with her passion for financial literacy to shed light on these critical topics. The former CPA has launched several businesses and currently provides strategy and implementation expertise to a variety of businesses including startups, retail, and non-profits.

Saturday, April 27: 1:00 to 4:00 PM

  • Lab 3: Exploring Self-Expression through Writing and Photography Instructor: Elena Chernock | In this three-hour workshop, students will reflect on personal stories and learn to effectively share them through photography and creative writing. Using their own camera phones, students will be introduced to the basics of composition and light by creating both traditional and non-traditional self-portraits. These images will be paired with short personal narratives, encouraging youth to use both writing and photography to self-advocate and be leaders in sharing their stories with a broader audience. No experience necessary, because in creativity, there are no levels. Bring a smartphone for this workshop, or let RS staff know if you need to borrow one.

  • Lab 4: A “Magical” Cloud Experience: Intro To Cloud Computing & Building An Internet Of Things (Iot) Magic Wand Instructors: Amazon Web Services | You may or may not have heard about cloud computing, but you probably have heard of Netflix or Fortnite by Epic Games. These awesome brands are powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS). In this workshop, we will give you a big picture introduction to cloud computing and why you should care about it. You will also hear from a number of Amazonians who have very different job functions at AWS to understand what they think the building blocks are to a successful technology career. Then we will ask you to roll up your sleeves and help test a new product idea. You will work in small groups, each led by an Amazonian, to turn an ordinary stick into an IoT magic wand to cast a spell and ward off evil dragons. A group of AWS Solutions Architects, a software development engineer, and a product manager will lead this workshop. No computer science background is required for participation.Solutions Architect: Miles Welsh, Brandon Bouier, Greeshma Nallapareddy, Kira Gobes, Christine Samson; Software Development Engineer: Gerard Matthew; Product Manager: Angelina Howard; Program Manager: Tina Einkauf, Shruti Arora

Sunday, April 28: 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM

  • Lab 5: Thinking About College? Discover How Personality & Preferences Match College Majors & Careers Instructors: Kimberly Petersen & Giovanni Milan | How does your unique personality "type" connect to what school or work environment will allow you thrive? How does it also shape what careers to consider? To help guide you in answering these questions, take the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator assessment, and engage in an interactive experience to see your type in action. Mina Velamoor, Rainier Scholars’ Career Pathways initiative will also introduce you to Virtual Job Shadow, an online interactive career tool. Dig into how your personality, preferences, and interests relate to important decisions such as which college to attend, which academic major to study, and which career pathways to explore. Kimberly Petersen and Giovanni Milan are part of the Rainier Scholars College Support team supporting college students and recent graduates with their career and professional development.

  • Lab 6: Lights, Camera, Collective Action! Urban Planning & Social Justice Instructor: Ishmael Nunez | The greatest power to make change in community comes from collective action and decision making. From joining a protest to running for city council, urban planning is ultimately about building community. Led by representatives from the City of Seattle, students will take a tour to understand how they can collaborate with others in their communities to influence change in their schools, neighborhoods, and the city.

Sunday, April 28: 1:00 to 4:00 PM

  • Lab 7: Leadership in Action: Design of Public Spaces Instructor: Julia Levitt | What are the important questions for leaders to ask when we are trying to design new spaces for our city? In this session, students will discuss what factors designers need to consider when creating places for the public. Who are the users? Who are the stakeholders? How might the conditions of the neighborhood or region change over time? Decisions made by leaders and active citizens help shape the spaces where we live, work and play. You will learn about a case study of the Seattle Center Skate Plaza, a new public outdoor skateboarding plaza that will be built to replace the 10-year-old Seattle Center skatepark, which was recently torn down to make way for the renovation of the Seattle Center Arena. The plaza is being designed collaboratively with an active community of stakeholders, and you will have a chance to give feedback on the project. As a group, we will talk about the ways that community members can play a role, and think about innovative ideas for improving the public engagement process. Course instructor Julia Levitt works for the City of Seattle, advising on master planning and redevelopment of the 74-acre Seattle Center campus.

  • Lab 8: Utilizing Online Resources to Support Student Learning Instructor: Liz Sadler| You will better understand how to use the world of online services and resources for math, science, history, and literature. We will also discuss how to get the most out of your online grading systems including seeing trends and patterns, not just overall grades. Be sure to bring your school login information. Are you working on a paper, project, reading a difficult book or tackling a difficult math topic? There will be time to work on these! Bring your work. Be prepared! This is a great workshop for current 9th and 10th graders, but everyone is welcome. This workshop is taught by Rainier Scholars’ very own Liz Sadler, who is the resident genius for all things.
