Saturday, August 17: 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM

  • Lab 1: The Role of Identity in Leadership Instructor: Jorge Valcarcel | Many of you have already realized the impact that Rainier Scholars and your high school experience are having on your identity. This workshop explores the idea of leadership across different dimension of identity including cultural background, social position, as well as personality traits. For example, are leaders always extroverts? Do they lead with a clear, unwavering vision or are they willing to adapt? Is leadership any different when your members look or think differently than you do? In this workshop, we will watch leaders from both history and today and discuss how their identities impacted their leadership style. Jorge Valcarcel, a Prep for Prep program alumni, will lead this discussion. Rainier Scholars was modeled after the Prep for Prep program in New York City and both share the mission of identifying promising students of color and preparing them for both success in life and as well as leadership in their communities. Jorge recently relocated to the area and manages investments for the Seattle office of Citi Private Bank.

Saturday, August 17: 1:00 to 4:00 PM

  • Lab 2: The Unwritten Rules of Business and Career Success Instructor: Diankha Linear| How are leadership and success measured in the business world?  It is hard for everyone to figure this out.  If you are a person of color, the first in your family to graduate from college, and/or the first to enter into the corporate world, however, it can be even harder to figure out the unwritten rules by which you are being measured.  Diankha Linear, Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary at Convoy, one of Seattle's fastest growing tech start up companies, will break down these rules and engage the group in a lively discussion designed to reveal more about the realities of a fast-paced workplace and the benefits of making a strong first impression as you launch your career. Ms. Linear brings over 20 years of legal and business experience with Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, the military, not-for-profit organizations and top-tier law firms.  Diankha is a Seattle native and graduate of both the University of Pennsylvania Law School and the University of Washington.

  • Lab 3: Know Your Strengths and Shine! The Dependable Strength Process Instructors: Sharon Allen Felton & Katie Hearn Zang | What is the best of you have to offer??? Our most effective leaders embody their core strengths, can clearly articulate them to others, and harness the strengths of their team to move toward a vision.  Knowledge of your primary strengths, skills and talents is also key to exploring college majors, landing the job you want, building your career, and more.  Yet, we often have blind spots when it comes to knowing our best selves.  In the Dependable Strengths Workshop, you will begin to identify some of your core strengths and learn strategies to further clarify your talent and track significant experiences that can act as a guide map for your future. “Imagine what would happen in your life if you took your strengths seriously,” Jean Haldane, co-developer of the Dependable Strengths Process.  Sharon Allen Felton (MA Ed Psych) and Katie Hearn Zang (MSW), Dependable Strengths Master Trainers & Career Coaches with many years of experience guiding young folks in high school and colleges across WA state, including the UW,  to realize their potential, choose majors that align with their strengths, and secure work that means something to them.
